La forme symbolique de l’entrelacs est faite, selon Marcel Brion, « de la combinaison de deux thèmes (…) : la spirale et la tresse ». Le motif de la tresse (…) est un motif fermé et par là pessimiste, à moins que nous ne considérions comme une perspective réconfortante et riche d’espoir la théorie de l’éternel retour, dont la figure de la tresse est la formulation la plus simple et la plus évidente. (…) la tresse la plus rudimentaire (…) est une prison sans possibilité d’évasion. 446 Nous avons déjà, à diverse reprise, croisé le deuxième thème, la spirale : Il s’agit d’une ligne qui s’enroule sur elle-même, à l’imitation peut-être de nombreuses spirales que l’on rencontre dans la nature, sur les coquillages par exemple. C’est un motif ouvert, et optimiste : rien n’est plus facile, lorsque l’on est parti d’une extrémité de cette spirale que d’atteindre l’autre extrémité. 447 Les deux mots qui, dans ces deux citations, apparaissent en italique, le fermé et l’ouvert correspondent à deux motifs caractéristiques du fantastique brionien. Marcel Brion met en scène un fantastique de l’enfermement et de l’ouverture, s’efforçant de promettre un passage toujours possible vers l’ouvert. Il retrouve trace de ces deux catégories dans l’œuvre du peintre allemand Caspar David Friedrich. De nombreuses toiles de cet artiste représentent le monde du fermé. Ce sont des peintures de falaises rocheuses « à travers lesquelles des failles laissent deviner des grottes et qui sont généralement associées à de vieilles sépultures germaniques », par exemple La Tombe d’Hermann, les Sépultures des héros d’autrefois, ou encore La porte rocheuse dans l’Uttewalder Grund qui montre la puissance menaçante des rochers à travers lesquels les voyageurs ont peine à se frayer un chemin 448 . « Tout ce qui relève du fermé, dans l’œuvre de Friedrich, fait allusion à des obstacles, physiques ou spirituels peu importe, qui arrêtent la marche de l’homme dans son évolution vers la lumière, vers l’espace ouvert », précise Marcel Brion dans Peinture romantique 449 . La forêt constitue un tel obstacle. La végétation touffue, de laquelle il est difficile de sortir, évoque l’étouffement de l’individu victime des éléments hostiles.
