La présence d’ « immenses paquebots blancs et or », de « trois-mâts » donne une impression de lointain et assimile la mort au voyage. Tel qu’il est décrit, l’univers souterrain rappelle les gravures et les peintures fantastiques que Marcel Brion aimait regarder. La présence du vaisseau fait penser au navire étonnant de Jacob Isaac Swanenburgh qui transporte sa cargaison de damnés, dont certains ne trouvent pas place dans l’embarcation et sont précipités par-dessus bord. D’autres infortunés dégringolent d’une passerelle plus lointaine. Chez Marcel Brion la foule est tout autant cohue. Les âmes en peine se précipitent, sans que quiconque ne pense à tendre la main au plus faible. Chacun se hâte vers le premier bateau. Nous retrouvons dans le texte comme chez le peintre l’idée de chute : « Parfois l’un d’eux, moins adroit ou moins fort, lâchait la corde et tombait dans le fleuve » (FTA, 47). Lorsque le bateau a reçu son chargement de passagers, il s’en va dans le brouillard. La présence supposée d’un vaste espace qui se déploie autour d’une vaste mer intérieure fait penser à Jules Verne 438 et aux eaux-fortes de John Martin. Dans ces gravures, d’étroites failles font communiquer le monde des vivants et le monde souterrain, l’un et l’autre monde étant séparés par une épaisse coupole de pierre. Le royaume souterrain est d’abord une très grande salle, close, avec les perspectives d’une mer pouvant être agitée d’eaux tumultueuses. La salle relève de la prison et du décor d’opéra, éclairée par un demi-jour inquiétant. Des grottes et galeries sont susceptibles de contenir une large part, sinon la totalité, de l’humanité. Marcel Brion s’appuie sur ces représentations mais utilise les atouts qu’offre l’écriture. Il ajoute des éléments sonores : Sir John entend des appels, des gémissements, les enfants « pleurent doucement » (FTA, 48), les bateau lancent de longs coups de sirène, le capitaine crie dans son porte-voix. Le descriptif permet d’installer une profusion d’objets : embarcations, cloches, chaînons, cabestans. Il y a aussi présence de magasins, et l’ensemble s’élargit aux dimensions d’une ville « avec ses hôtels de négociants, ses estaminets, ses boutiques désertées » (FTA, 48). Comme dans les Carceri de Piranèse, les architectures sont animées de la présence d’une humanité tragique. L’homme est prisonnier, au beau milieu d’un cachot-labyrinthe, captif de lui-même et de son destin, confronté à un monde où il est peu de chose 439 . L’image du brouillard fait apparaître un monde où domine la couleur grise. Mais le brouillard n’affecte pas seulement la lumière.
