gemaakt tussen beoefenaren die in ruimte niets meer zien dan een uitdrukking of weerspiegeling
van de samenleving, beoefenaren die wel een wisselwerking veronderstellen maar de samenleving
meer gewicht toekennen, en beoefenaren die ruimte en samenleving nevenschikken zoals
Lefebvre. Ruimte heeft de voorname rol van een maatschappelijke relatie ‘[…] which is inherent
to property relationships (especially the ownership of the earth, of land) and also closely bound up
with the forces of production (which impose a form on that earth or land); here we see the
polyvalence of social space, its “reality” at once formal and material. Though a product to be
used, to be consumed, it is also a means of production; networks of exchange and flows of raw
materials and energy fashion space and are determined by it. Thus this means of production,
produced as such, cannot be seperated either from the productive forces, including technology and
knowledge, or from the social division of labour which shapes it, or from the state and the
superstructure of society.’ 32 Lefebvre zag een eenheid tussen de krachten van productie en de
samenstellende delen daarvan (natuur, arbeid, technologie, kennis), structuren (eigendomsrelaties)
en superstructuren (instituties en de staat zelf). De notie van historische wording van plaatsen
door betekenisgeving in sociale interactie zoals Lefebvre en Paasi die hanteerden en de visie van
structurering op de relatie tussen individu en samenleving zoals Giddens die hanteerde (zie noot
13), zijn door Allan Pred aan elkaar verbonden. 33
De representatie van plaatsen of van sociale praktijken in de ruimte, vervat in taal zoals
in de volgende subparagraaf met betrekking tot Venetië, is gangbaar in cultuurstudies. ‘[…] a
shared epistemological sentiment holds that the focus on discourse is relevant to the study of the
city insofar as it informs analyses of social, cultural, political, or economic processes […]’ 34
Christopher Mele wees erop dat een studie naar discours en symboliek niet los mag en hoeft
komen te staan van sociaal-economische verschijnselen en landgebonden praktijken, van patronen
van macht ook. ‘Widely circulated images, rhetoric, and symbols together do not exist simply as
descriptions but also as ready explanations of existing social, economic, and political conditions
and the potential for radical changes in them.’ 35 Dergelijke verbanden zijn de focus van studies
inzake wetenschap, technologie en samenleving. 36
2.2.3 Venetië als voorbeeld
Hoewel Lefebvre stelde dat ruimte geproduceerd wordt en in samenhang daarmee eenvormig en
reproduceerbaar kan zijn, erkende hij het bestaan van unieke ruimten. Hij noemde de situatie van
Venetië, dat ooit is voortgebracht maar sindsdien een kwaliteit heeft verworven die afwijkt van
die van enkel een product. ‘Consider the case of a city – a space which is fashioned, shaped and
invested by social activities during a finite historical period. Is this city a work or a product? Take
Venice, for instance. If we define works as unique, original and primordial, as occupying a space
yet associated with a particular time, a time of maturity between rise and decline, then Venice can
