Abstract
Sport and tourism have been a real alternative on looking for new Portuguese destinations.
Golf is the one that better represents this fact. This article is part of a thesis which has the
goal to know the golf tourist that visits Madeira Islands. The advisement involves a random
sample of the golf tourist that visits Madeira Islands and its three Golf Courses and an
anonymous questionary to the same tourists. The results will concede if there is or isn’t a
sportive tourist in Madeira Islands named golf tourist. The identification of the tourist profile
will allow the recognition of the segment features. These characteristics will contribute to
define future strategies to develop Golf Tourism in Madeira Islands as well as to understand
if there are differences between Madeira Islands Golf and Algarve Golf.

Introdução
Desporto e Turismo são áreas da actividade socioeconómica em franco crescimento, em
Portugal e no Mundo. Tendo este estudo por base o turismo desportivo será necessário
abordar este tipo de turismo de uma forma mais particular em relação aos outros tipos de
turismo. O turismo desportivo representa um conjunto de práticas onde as duas se cruzam
tornando-se interdependentes, merecendo por isso alguma especialização no seu estudo.
Bui-Xuan, Gleyse e Pigeassou (2003) referem que “clarificar a noção não significa
necessariamente que o fenómeno definido como turismo desportivo não possa ser analisado
através de metodologias usadas no estudo do turismo e do desporto”. Vários são os autores
e organismos que têm apresentado trabalhos no sentido de compreender e melhor definir o
