modalida<strong>de</strong>s, do jornalista e a razão <strong>de</strong>ssa inclinação, ou dos canais <strong>de</strong> distribuição<br />

utilizados.<br />

Abstract<br />

The press of the Autonomous Region of Ma<strong>de</strong>ira (ARM) un<strong>de</strong>rstands the importance<br />

of sport to its rea<strong>de</strong>rs, by reserving 22% of this information in their newspapers. The<br />

Government also recognizes that importance by including it in its programme, giving it a<br />

budget of € 34,870,462.00 and having a public institution to implement its policy.<br />

In these circumstances, the question arose of how one could articulate the regional<br />

sports policy, the media and the characteristics of different sport activities, in or<strong>de</strong>r to<br />

otimize the investments that are ma<strong>de</strong> at the level of sports phenomenon, in its broa<strong>de</strong>st<br />

sense. In seeking to answer this point, we characterize the type of relationship between the<br />

characteristics of sport, Regional Sports Policy and sports information published by regional<br />

Portuguese newspapers, of general information and daily periodicity in ARM.<br />

After the collection and presentation of data, we will try to un<strong>de</strong>rstand the reasons<br />

for which there is a particular distribution of visibility of certain sports and sports sectors.<br />

That is, if this can be influenced by the behaviour that the activities request, the sports<br />

organizations responsible, the sports level, the journalist and the reason for this inclination,<br />

or the distribution channels used.<br />
