first test the kinetic coefficient values decreased hugely and in the following order: OPP (0.75 – 0.17), LDPE(0.64 – 0.18) and PET (0.42 – 0.22). However, e<strong>di</strong>ble-coated films showed lower optical performances in termsof transparency and haze. Transparency decreased mainly for LDPE (36%), whereas the haze index increasedabove all for OPP (85%). Not significant <strong>di</strong>fferences were observed as far as the water vapour permeability isconcerned, except for a slight reduction for PET (from 15.78 cm 3 m -2 day -1 to 13.53 cm 3 m -2 day -1 at 23°C and90% of RH), suggesting that not meaningful effects arose from the ad<strong>di</strong>tion of a hydrophobic component in theoriginal formulation. Finally, the solubility in water of the coating was around 25% for all the three plastic filmsas substrates. The obtained data suggest that the lipid-protein e<strong>di</strong>ble coating tested in this study has a great potentialfor improving the most important characteristics of plastic packaging films.2.
