MUSIC THERAPY AS AN ANSWER TO
SPECIAL NEEDS OF FRINGE GROUPS
The working group „Music Therapy“ within the European Association for
Psychotherapy (EAP) exists since 1997 and is defining the professional identity in
the sense of psychotherapy which is primarily taking place within the medium of
music itself. One main point of focus of this working group was the political
dimension of psychotherapy, the right for psychotherapy for everybody. Thus the
participation in the EAP-symposium about „Psychotherapy, Ethics and Human
Right“ 1999 in Straßbourg was as well a result as the following group-presentation
at the 2 nd World Congress for Psychotherapy 1999 in Vienna:
“Following current schools of thought about requirements for
psychotherapeutic treatment it is said to be necessary on the patients behalf to have
the ability for insight and reflection, for verbalizing and relating as well as to be
intellectually sophisticated. For some sections of the population without these
abilities psychotherapeutic treatment is normally not accessible. Also the health
insurance system mostly does not admit clients to psychotherapy who don't fulfil
the above criterias. Is it possible that psychotherapeutic treatment will only be seen
as worthwhile if the patient will be re-integrated as a fully independent member into
society?
Up to now the discussion for indication for psychotherapeutic treatment took
place predominantly on the level of the way of proceeding: conflict orientated
versus supportive psychotherapy, regression encouraging versus regression
restricting psychotherapy for instance. Very seldom you hear a discussion about
