d'économie et de politique étrangère est déjà mieux rendu par des relations
internationales et transnationales qui reproduisent ailleurs des conflits intérieurs. C'est
pourquoi nous empruntons beaucoup aux travaux d'Amy Kaplan et réservons l'usage
du terme « empire américain» pour mettre en relation l'exercice de la souveraineté
nationale d'un empire que sont l'entité politique connue comme les États-Unis
d'Amérique, une entité politique dont les frontières sont en constante expansion
globale: «The American Empire has long followed a double impetus to construct
boundaries and patrol ail movement across them and to break down those borders
through the desire for unfettered expansion » (Kaplan 2002: 15; c'est nous qui
soulignons).
Nous sommes également en accord avec Kaplan pow' cerner la représentation des
États-Unis comme un État-nation/empire comportant un rapport trouble et avec le
projet identitaire national: «1 am interested in how dominant representations of
national identity at home are informed and deformed by the anarchie encounters of
empire, even as those same representations displace and disavow imperialism as
something remote to US nationhood » (Kaplan, 2002 : 16) 18. En étudiant les formes
d'impérialisme et les pratiques impériales américaine, il est possible de comprendre et
d'exposer « how putatively domestic conflicts are not simply contained at home but
how they both emerge in response to international struggles and spill over national

appelle « l'anarchie de l'empire» provient de sa réinterprétation du travail pionnier de W.E.B. Du Bois
sur l'impérialisme et la race, dans lequel il a critiqué le colonialisme et l'exploitation raciale qui
l'accompagnait. Le terme est emprunté à un poème de Du Bois qui « suggests the breakdown or defiance
of the monolithic system of order that empire aspires to impose on the world, an order reliant on c1ear
divisions between metropolis and colony, colonizer and colonized, national and international spaces, the
domestic and the foreign» (Kaplan, 2002 : 13). La force analytique de son « anarchie de l'empire»
réside dans sa compréhension de l'impérialisme américain à travers son histoire, qui montre à quel point
l'anarchie a été « integral and constitutive part of empire, central to the representation of US imperialism
in dispersed locations and at different historical moments» (Kàplan, 2002: 13).
