dramatic art in Brussels, in New York (Lee Strasberg<br />

Actor’s Studio), and at the Paris-based Fratellini<br />

circus, she played onstage and on TV. She turned a<br />

Having graduated from the Conservatoire Libre du Cinéma<br />

Français in 1981, François Hanss was an assistant<br />

director from 1987 to 1992 (1985 Brigade des Moeurs<br />

/ US DVD: Brigade <strong>of</strong> Death, Max Pécas; 1986 Libertine,<br />

HAPKE-PRENCZINA, SABINE • 495<br />

musical short, Laurent Boutonnat; 1987 Tristana, short,<br />

Laurent Boutonnat). He directed mainly commercials,<br />

musical videos, and shorts. Arthur-Emmanuel Pierre<br />

graduated from the Fémis in 1995 and received a grant<br />

from the Hachette Foundation in 1996. He wrote or<br />

co-wrote about twenty shorts and co-authored the<br />

screenplays <strong>of</strong> La Squale (Fabrice Genestal, 2000) and<br />

Podium (Yann Moix, 2004).<br />

Both her parents were teachers. From 1966 to<br />

1976, she successively lived in Ethiopia, where she<br />

completed her secondary studies, and then in Iran,<br />

and Italy. She settled in Paris to study cinema. Having<br />

graduated with several bachelors’ degrees (sinology,<br />

modern letters, and cinema), she entered fi lms as an<br />

assistant editor and assistant director. She also was a<br />

journalist for Radio France International.<br />
