own gypsy band in the USA in 1930. He appeared<br />

teaching at the University <strong>of</strong> Paris VIII (since 1972), he<br />

worked as a cinematographer on about ten movies, in-<br />

de son Maître (Gérard Mordillat, Nicolas Philibert), before<br />

resuming his fi lm directing career in 1981. He also<br />

From 1957 to 1963, he was editor in chief <strong>of</strong> the Cahiers<br />

du Cinéma. He started directing in 1950. While<br />

fi lming his own movies, he wrote the screenplay<br />

and dialogue <strong>of</strong> Tous les Garçons s’appellent Patrick /<br />

Charlotte et Véronique (short, Jean-Luc Godard, shot<br />

in 1957) and made some appearances in fi lms<br />
