After studying classical music at the Conservatoire
with Olivier Messiaen, he briefl y was a pianist for
singer Henri Salvador. A friend of Pierre Boulez, he is
known mainly as a theoretician and a composer. He
notably wrote scores for Alain Robbe-Grillet (1963
L’Immortelle / L’immortale, France / Italy; 1967 Trans-
Europ-Express; 1968 L’Homme qui ment / Muz, ktory luze
