The son <strong>of</strong> a veterinary father and a social worker<br />

mother, he attended Antoine Vitez’s acting courses<br />

at the Paris National Conservatory <strong>of</strong> Dramatic<br />

Arts for fi ve years. He worked as an assistant stage<br />

director with Vitez and himself directed a play in<br />

1976 (Hunting Scenes <strong>of</strong> Bavaria). He made his fi lm<br />

debut in 1981 (L’Indiscrétion, Pierre Lary) and soon<br />

landed leading roles (1983 L’Homme blessé / UK<br />

and USA: The Wounded Man, Patrice Chéreau; 1986<br />

37°2 le Matin / UK and USA: Betty Blue, Jean-Jacques<br />

Beineix; 1987 Maladie d’Amour, Jacques Deray, 1989<br />

Jacques Beineix). He co-starred in a couple <strong>of</strong> Luc<br />

the USA–<strong>French</strong> co-production Killing Zoe (Roger<br />

Avary, 1995). He probably gave his most impressive<br />

and best performance as King Charles IX in La<br />

Reine Margot / La regina Margot / Der Bartholomäusnacht<br />

/ USA: Queen Margot (Patrice Chéreau,<br />

France / Italy / West Germany). He directed only<br />

After studying literature fi rst then history <strong>of</strong> art at<br />

the Institute <strong>of</strong> Art and Archaeology, he attended<br />

IDHEC. His fi rst feature fi lm was praised by Alain<br />

Robbe-Grillet. He collaborated as screenwriter on<br />

a feature fi lm Tendres Cousines / Zärtliche Cousinen /<br />

USA: Cousins in Love / Tender Cousins (David Hamilton,<br />

1980) and a few TV movies (1986 Tropique du Crabe<br />

/ El Tropico del Cangrejo, Juan Luis Buñuel, France /<br />

Argentina; 1992 Le Fils d’un Autre, Michel Lang; 1995<br />

Fanny sefait un Sang d’Encre, Alain de Halleux, Belgium;<br />

He co-authored, with his wife (and <strong>of</strong>ten actress)<br />

A music lover, he directed several operas in Italy<br />

(Wozzeck, Salomé, La Bohème, Idomeneo, Fidelio, Macbeth).<br />

In 1998, he published a novel: Les Moissons de<br />

l’Océan (Editions Jean-Claude Lattès).<br />
