Having graduated with bachelor’s and master’s degrees<br />

in philosophy from the University <strong>of</strong> Nanterre<br />

(1969–1970), he enrolled in the Service de la Recherche<br />

de l’ORTF (<strong>French</strong> television research department)<br />

(1971–1972). After completing his military service<br />

in Tunisia (1971–1972), he worked as an assistant<br />

to the <strong>Film</strong>s de l’Atalante (1973) before becoming a<br />

fi ction adviser for a <strong>French</strong> TV channel, Antenne 2<br />

(1974–1979). From 1970 to 1975, he directed seven<br />

shorts (Le Verbe être; Font-Guilhem; Quelques Gouttes<br />

d’Orage; La Septième Chandelle; Eléments pour une Authenticité;<br />
