KAREL, WILLIAM (1940, Tunisia–)<br />

After studying in Paris, he moved to Israel, where he<br />

lived for about twelve years in a kibbutz. He worked as<br />

a photographer for several agencies, including Gamma<br />

(1972–1976) and Sygma (1976–1983). Since his return<br />

to France, he has directed mostly political documentaries<br />

for TV. He also co-wrote two <strong>of</strong> Philippe Faucon’s<br />

movies (1993 Sabine; 1996 Mes 17 Ans).<br />

A teenage model for a fashion magazine, she also appeared<br />

in commercials. A short in which she played<br />

(1959 Pigen og skoene, Ib Schmedes) obtained a prize<br />

at the Cannes <strong>Film</strong> Festival, and she decided to settle<br />

in France, where she briefl y worked as a mannequin.<br />

In 1960, she co-starred in her fi rst <strong>French</strong> fi lm (Ce Soir<br />

ou jamais, Michel Deville) and met Jean-Luc Godard,<br />

who hired her for Le Petit Soldat / UK and USA: The<br />

Little Soldier. She married her director in 1961 and<br />

remained his wife and muse until 1967 (1961 Une
