The son <strong>of</strong> an economist father, he notably studied<br />

at Harvard Law School and in the Parisian faculties<br />

<strong>of</strong> letters and law. Having graduated with bachelor’s<br />

degrees in law and literature and a diploma in public<br />

law superior studies, he was a lawyer from 1954 to<br />

1959. He began working on fi lms as an assistant to<br />

William Wyler in the USA (1951 Detective Story; Big<br />

Country) before appearing as an actor in Jean-Luc<br />

Godard’s A Bout de Souffl e / UK: By a Tether / UK<br />

and USA: Breathless and directing his fi rst movie,<br />

starring actress Jean Seberg (1938–1979), his wife<br />

from 1958 to 1960. A TV director and producer, he<br />

collaborated on such programs as Panorama du XXe<br />

Siècle (1966–1970), XXe Siècle, Point Contre Point, Les<br />

machines et les Hommes, Voilà, Plein Cadre, La Télévision<br />

des Autres (1972–1974), and 60 Minutes pour convaincre.<br />

He served as a special assistant to the director<br />

(1966 How to Steal a Million, William Wyler, USA) and<br />

assistant director (1968 A Flea in Her Ear / La Puce à<br />

l’Oreille, Jacques Charon, USA / France).<br />
