His ancestors were peasants, soldiers, and sailors.<br />

The son <strong>of</strong> a horticulturist and landscape gardener,<br />

he started his working life drawing ships for the<br />

shipyards <strong>of</strong> Loire. He also was chief editor <strong>of</strong> a regional<br />

review and published poems, short stories, and<br />

critical essays. Having settled in Paris, he became a<br />

successful novelist. Many <strong>of</strong> his books were brought<br />

to the screen (1945 La Ferme du Pendu, Jean Dréville;<br />

1947 Le Bateau à Soupe, Maurice Gleize; Le Village<br />

perdu, Christian Stengel; 1948 La Figure de Proue,<br />

After his studies at the IDHEC (1972–1975), he<br />

joined a group <strong>of</strong> militant fi lmmakers for which he<br />

shot reports and then edited (1980 Happy End, short,<br />

Ann Le Monnier) and directed shorts and documentaries<br />

for ten years. He also was a co-screenwriter<br />

(1994 Le Fils préféré, Nicole Garcia; 2006 Perl oder Pica<br />

/ Canada: Little Secrets, Pol Cruchten, Luxembourg),<br />

screenwriter, adapter, dialogist (1994 Le Joueur de<br />
