ETIÉVANT, HENRI (Henri Gaston Etiévan-Estival<br />

/ March 13, 1870, Paris, France–August 9, 1953, Paris,<br />

France)<br />

Having trained at the National Conservatory <strong>of</strong><br />

Dramatic Art <strong>of</strong> Paris, he was an experienced stage<br />

actor (he notably worked with André Antoine at the<br />

Théâtre Libre) when he entered fi lms. From 1908<br />

(L’Empreinte ou la Main rouge, Henri Burguet) to 1937<br />

(L’Homme du Jour / UK and USA: The Man <strong>of</strong> the Hour,<br />

Julien Duvivier), he played in more than sixty movies<br />

and notably portrayed Javert in Albert Capellani’s<br />

Les Misérables in 1912. His daughter, Yvette Etiévant<br />

(1922–2003), was an actress and a talent agent.<br />
