Educated at the Sorbonne (master’s in history), he
started out as a trainee assistant director (1975 La
Cage, Pierre Granier-Deferre; 1976 Duelle, Jacques
Rivette; Noroît, Jacques Rivette). He learned his craft
assisting such directors as Roman Polanski (1976 Le
Locataire / The Tenant, France / USA), Bertand Blier
(1977 Préparez vos Mouchoirs / UK: Get Out Your Handkerchiefs,
France / Belgium), Henri Verneuil (1979 I
