He was only sixteen years old when he discovered<br />

the nightlife and jazz clubs (Le Tabou, Le Lorientais,<br />

Le Club Saint-Germain-des-Prés) <strong>of</strong> Saint-Germaindes-Prés.<br />

While he was still studying at the IDHEC,<br />

he learned drawing at the Académie Jullian. From<br />

1951 to 1953, he traveled around the world and was<br />

notably under the spell <strong>of</strong> the West Indies. Having<br />

returned to France, he worked as an assistant director<br />

to Henri-Georges Clouzot (1954 Les Diaboliques<br />

/ UK: The Fiends / USA: Diabolique / US TV: The Devils).<br />

After his military service in the <strong>French</strong> army’s Cinematographic<br />

Service, he shared his time between<br />

cinema and painting. From the 1960s to the early<br />

1980s, he shot many TV reports.<br />
