After completing his secondary studies, he entered<br />

the Paris Conservatory. He won a fi rst prize for<br />

comedy in 1896 and made his stage debut under the<br />

pseudonym <strong>of</strong> Seigneur, signing a two-year contract<br />

at the Théâtre de l’Odéon. Then he joined the Variétés<br />

troupe as Prince and soon became <strong>of</strong> the most<br />

popular boulevard actors. Hired by Pathé, he won international<br />

fame starring in comic movies (more than<br />

200 movies from 1908 L’Armoire normande, short,<br />

Georges Monca, to 1933 Mille Neuf Cents, short,<br />

Roger Goupillières). Famous as Rigadin in France, he<br />

was known as Whiffl es in England and the USA, as<br />

Moritz in Germany, and as Tartufi ni in Italy.<br />
