BARJOL, JEAN-MICHEL (May 19, 1938, Marseille,<br />

Bouches-du-Rhône, France–)<br />

He was an orphan at a very young age and had a<br />

eventful and disturbed childhood. After spending<br />

years in boarding schools, he graduated with a bachelor’s<br />

degree in natural sciences. At the end <strong>of</strong> his<br />

twenty-seven months <strong>of</strong> military service, he opted<br />

for cinema and began fi lming his own story, day after<br />

day, without script. He founded a theatrical group,<br />

Le Théâtre du Temps Présent, and shot a four-hour<br />

western with the members <strong>of</strong> the troupe (Blues pour<br />

un Cow Boy qui a mal au Ventre). In 1981, he co-created,<br />

with three friends <strong>of</strong> his, a fi lm production company,<br />

B.Q.H.L. Productions. He also cut a few trailers and<br />

directed commercials.<br />
