Having trained at the I.F.C. (Institut de Formation<br />

cinématographique), he started as an actor, notably<br />

working in Avignon with the Living Theater<br />

(1967–1968) and with Le Grand Magic Circus et ses<br />

Animaux Tristes in Paris. He played in a dozen movies,<br />

Having trained at the Conservatoire National d’Art<br />

Dramatique de Paris (National Conservatory <strong>of</strong> Dramatic<br />

Art), he was hired by some <strong>of</strong> the greatest <strong>French</strong><br />

stage directors <strong>of</strong> his time (Firmin-Gémier, André<br />

Antoine, Lugné-Poe). He made his fi lm debut with<br />

Abel Gance (La Digue / Pour sauver la Hollande) in 1911<br />

and starred in movies directed by the most important<br />

directors <strong>of</strong> the silent era, notably Louis Feuillade<br />

(1912 La Maison des Lions; 1916 C’est pour les Orphelins),<br />

Germaine Dulac (1920 La Fête espagnole; La Belle Dame<br />

sans Merci), and Henri Fescourt (1921 Mathias Sandorf).<br />

When the movies began talking, his career declined, and<br />

he landed only supporting roles after the late 1920s. He<br />

did his last fi lm appearance in Trois Jours à vivre (Gilles<br />

Grangier, 1957). He directed two comedies.<br />
