Twin brothers, they studied art in the Ecole Nationale<br />

Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (Art Decorative Superior<br />

National School <strong>of</strong> Paris). Spotted and helped<br />

by Paul Grimault, they directed their fi rst animated<br />

short in 1973 before working as character designers<br />

After completing his secondary studies, he entered<br />

the Louis Lumière-Vaugirard Superior National<br />

School, where he learned cinematic and photographic<br />

techniques. He was a member <strong>of</strong> the Citroën Expedition<br />

in Africa, where he shot his fi rst 16-mm<br />

documentaries. During the Algerian War, he was a<br />

news cameraman in the <strong>French</strong> army’s Cinematographic<br />

Service. Having returned to civilian life, he<br />

made his fi lm debut as a trainee assistant director<br />
