MARAVAL, PIERRE (1950, Castres, Tarn, France–)<br />

A former fi lm critic at Cinématographe in the 1970s,<br />

he settled in New York, where he lived (and began<br />

painting) until 1980. Having returned to Paris, he<br />

founded with three friends an alternative group, Beau<br />

Lézard, which promoted young painters. In 1982, he<br />

exhibited his works at the New York Atlantide Gallery.<br />

Parallel with his research in plastics, he directed<br />

a feature fi lm and several documentaries.<br />

MARBOEUF, JEAN (September 26, 1942, Montluçon,<br />

Allier, France–)<br />

The son <strong>of</strong> a Dunlop worker father and a shop assistant<br />

mother, he received a vocational training certifi<br />

cate as a salesman and window dresser. He earned<br />

a living successively working as a shop assistant in<br />

a large store, traveling salesman, driver, packer, barman,<br />

and extra. In 1968–1969, he was a secretary for<br />

writers Daniel Guérin and Roger Stéphane and met<br />

Jean-Luc Godard. He used his knowledge <strong>of</strong> sports<br />

to write comic strip screenplays for the magazines<br />

Pilote and Tintin. After vainly trying to serve as an assistant<br />

director, he entered fi lms shooting shorts. He<br />

also was a technical consultant: 1987 Accroche-Cœur<br />

(Chantal Picault, shot in 1985) and played in a TV<br />

movie (1989 Une Saison de Feuilles, Serge Leroy).<br />
