The son <strong>of</strong> an Armenian longshoreman father and a<br />

German mother, he grew up in the L’Estaque district<br />

in Marseille. Having graduated with a diploma in<br />

letters and human sciences from Aix-en-Provence<br />

University and with a master’s degree in sociology,<br />

he met René Féret, who <strong>of</strong>fered him the opportunity<br />

to co-write the screenplay and the dialogue <strong>of</strong> Fernand<br />

(1980). Besides his directing work, he co-wrote<br />

Le Souffl eur (also producer, Frank Le Wita, 1985)<br />

and L’Âge des Possibles (Pascale Ferran, 1995), was<br />

technical adviser (1991 L’Homme imaginé, Patricia<br />

Bardon, shot in 1986–1989), and, after founding two<br />

production companies, Agat <strong>Film</strong>s Productions and<br />

Ex-Nihilo, produced many movies (1986 Baudelaire<br />
