March 27, 1995, Paris, France)<br />

Of peasant and labor origin, he was fi rst a renowned<br />

painter and regularly exhibited his works from 1957<br />

to 1962. He became a highly praised stage designer<br />

and went to Lyon in 1958, joining Roger Planchon and<br />

his Compagnie du Théâtre de la Cité. He shot some<br />

stuff for the troupe before making his real fi lm debut<br />

in 1963. He was the technical adviser <strong>of</strong> René Féret<br />

for Histoire de Paul (1975).<br />

In 1964, he began his Cinema Studies at INC <strong>of</strong><br />

Algiers and completed them in IDHEC, the famous<br />

Parisian fi lm school. Having graduated in 1967, he was<br />

one <strong>of</strong> the most rewarded Algerian directors before<br />

he started shooting in France in the mid-1990s. He<br />

also authored a novel published in 1995 (Bab El-Oued,<br />

Editions du Seuil).<br />
