TÉCHINÉ, ANDRÉ (March 13, 1943, Valence<br />

d’Agen, Tarn-et-Garonne, France–)<br />

A former student at the IDHEC, he failed his fi nal<br />

examination and became an assistant on the musical<br />

TV show Discorama. In 1964, he joined the staff <strong>of</strong><br />

the fi lm magazine Les Cahiers du Cinéma, in which he<br />

published criticism until 1967. He directed his fi rst<br />

short in 1965 and was briefl y a stage director in 1969<br />

(Chantage au Théâtre, Dacia Maraini). An assistant director<br />

for Jacques Rivette (L’Amour fou, 1969; shot in<br />

1967) and Marc’O (Les Idoles, 1968), he also co-wrote<br />

a few movies fi lmed by colleagues (Aloïse, Liliane de<br />

Kermadec, 1975; Mauvaise Fille, Régis Franc, 1991;<br />

Transatlantique / Transatlantico, Christine Laurent,<br />

France / Portugal, 1996; Café de la Plage / <strong>French</strong> TV:<br />

L’Homme qui ne savait pas être un Ami, Benoît Graffi<br />

n, 2001). He occasionally played small parts for Luc<br />

Moullet (Brigitte et Brigitte, 1966), Jean Eustache (La<br />

Maman et la Putain / USA: The Mother and the Whore,<br />

1973), and Philippe Garrel (Les Ministères de l’Art,<br />

1988). He appeared as himself in Cinématon (Gérard<br />

Courant, 1985) and in a couple <strong>of</strong> documentaries on<br />

his work (Cinéma de notre Temps: André Téchiné, après<br />

la Nouvelle Vague, Laurent Perrin, 1995; Kinomagazin:<br />

Das Zittern des Lebens—Das Kino des André Téchiné,<br />

Gerhard Midding, Germany, 1997). He was credited<br />

as a technical adviser in A toute Vitesse / USA: Full<br />

Speed (Gaël Morel, 1996).<br />
