The son <strong>of</strong> a schoolteacher, in 1940 he settled in<br />

Paris, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in<br />

philosophy. In 1946, he founded a fi lm review, L’Ecran<br />

Français. He authored about fi fteen novels, including<br />

Les Guichets du Louvre (Denoël Montrouge, 1960), Le<br />

Treizième Caprice (Denoël, 1962), Marie Jeanne des<br />

Bernies (Robert Laffont, 1978), Des Enfants dans les<br />

Arbres (Robert Laffont, 1985), and Les Doigts (Editions<br />

Gaia, 2001), and an Encyclopédie du Cinéma<br />

(Editions Bordas, 1967), regularly reedited until<br />

today. He brought to the screen one <strong>of</strong> his novels<br />

and collaborated as screenwriter on several fi lms<br />
