Having graduated with a master’s degree in <strong>French</strong><br />

literature and a bachelor’s degree in linguistics, he directed<br />

many plays written by such authors as Brecht,<br />

Musset, Fassbinder, Corneille, Marivaux, Euripide, and<br />

Georges Bataille. He teaches the history and aesthetics<br />

<strong>of</strong> cinema at the Florent drama school.<br />

BURGUET, CHARLES (Charles Henry Lévy /<br />

Bicêtre, Val-de-Marne, France)<br />

After being a stage actor (1894–1906), he ran the<br />

Réjane theater (1906–1908). Then he was artistic<br />

director <strong>of</strong> Nice, Vichy, and Evian until August 1914.<br />

In 1912, he created his own production company in<br />

Nice, Les <strong>Film</strong>s Azur. During the shooting <strong>of</strong> Gosse de<br />

Riche in 1920, he went through a car crash (his actress<br />

Suzanne Grandais and cinematographer Marcel<br />

Ruette died in the accident). He resumed his career<br />

two years later. From 1925 to 1940, he was president<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Société des Auteurs.<br />
