MAGNAT, JULIEN (February 8, 1973, Aubenas,<br />

Ardèche, France–)<br />

A movie buff since his teenage years, he decided to<br />

be a director at age seventeen. Having won a full<br />

scholarship, he then opted to study in the UK for<br />

seven years, gaining his international baccalaureate<br />

from Atlantic College in Wales and a degree in fi lm<br />

from Reading University, England. During this time,<br />

he was also a fi lm critic for the cable station Telecential.<br />

In 1996, he returned to France and joined<br />

the most famous national fi lm school, the Fémis. He<br />

regularly collaborated on the <strong>French</strong> movie magazine<br />

L’Ecran Fantastique and co-wrote some episodes <strong>of</strong> an<br />

animated TV series (Skyland, France / Canada, 2006;<br />

Valérian et Laureline, France / Japan, 2007).<br />

he became the Gabonese TV manager in 1966. He<br />

directed plays and documentaries for <strong>French</strong> and US<br />

He wrote his fi rst play at age twelve. Then he attended<br />

Maurice Escande and Jean Marchat’s acting courses.<br />

He made his acting debut onstage in 1941 (Jeanne<br />

by Charles Péguy) and entered fi lms playing supporting<br />

roles (1942 Le Destin fabuleux de Désirée Clary /<br />

USA: Mlle Desiree, Sacha Guitry; 1943 Le Voyage de la
