Having graduated with a bachelor’s degree in law, he<br />

began his career as an assistant director to Marcel<br />

A member <strong>of</strong> Minister <strong>of</strong> Information André Malraux’s<br />

cabinet in 1945, he had a brief career as a director and<br />

producer (1950 Ballerina, Ludwig Berger; 1951 Olivia /<br />

USA: The Pit <strong>of</strong> Loneliness, Jacqueline Audry; L’Auberge<br />

rouge / USA: The Red Inn, Claude Autant-Lara; 1954 Les<br />

Intrigantes, Henri Decoin; 1955 Chéri-Bibi / Il forzato della<br />

Guiana, Marcello Pagliero, France / Italy). He died in a<br />

car crash at age forty. From 1946 to 1949, he was married<br />

to British actress Madeleine Carroll (1906–1987).<br />
