He made his secondary studies in Athens. At age<br />

fourteen, he joined the Greek Resistance during<br />

the occupation <strong>of</strong> France. After World War II, he<br />

studied political science in Athens and stage and fi lm<br />

directing in the USA as a grant holder <strong>of</strong> Syracuse<br />

University, New York (1949–1953), and in England<br />

as grant holder <strong>of</strong> the British Council. Having returned<br />

to Greece, he worked for radio (mostly for<br />

the Wednesday Theatre, 1956–1959) and stage (My<br />

Heart’s in the Highlands, William Saroyan, 1958). In<br />

1958, he organized the documentary department<br />

in the Greek Ministry <strong>of</strong> Information. The same<br />

year, he shot his fi rst movie, which also was the<br />

fi rst Greek documentary. He taught cinema at the<br />

Superior School <strong>of</strong> Cinema from 1956 to 1966 and<br />

collaborated as a fi lm critic on the review Cinema<br />

and Theatre. In 1960, he founded a movement, “the<br />

Group <strong>of</strong> Five,” which helped to release shorts in<br />

Greece (1960–1966). He edited I Zoi sti Mytillini<br />

(Leon Loisios, Greece). On April 21, 1967, he presented<br />

his movie Prosopo me prosopo at the Festival<br />

du Jeune Cinéma in Hyères and had to stay in<br />

France after having denounced the Greek colonels’<br />

coup d’état, which happened the very same day. He<br />

worked mostly for <strong>French</strong> TV and published several<br />

books, including a novel, Lilly’s Story (1982). Other<br />

(episode “Une Paix royale,” Gérard Gozlan).<br />
