Francis, who starred in the movies he directed and<br />

the one he wrote (1920 La Fête espagnole, Germaine<br />

Dulac). He never stopped writing in fi lm magazines<br />

(1918 Paris Midi; 1923–1924 Bonsoir). In 1920, he<br />

co-founded Le Journal du Ciné-Club and then, in 1921,<br />

Cinéa. He was a pioneer <strong>of</strong> cine-clubs. His novel Le<br />

Train sans Yeux was brought to the screen by Alberto<br />

Cavalcanti in 1926, two years after his death from<br />

working life as a cover girl. Married to actor Alain<br />

Delon in 1964, she made her fi lm debut three years<br />

later co-starring with him (1967 Le Samouraï / Frank<br />

Costello, faccia d’angelo / USA: The Godson, Jean-Pierre<br />

Melville, France / Italy). Seen in about thirty movies,<br />

she directed a couple <strong>of</strong> motion pictures. She wrote<br />

a novel (2006 Au plus fort de l’Orage, Editions Robert<br />

Laffont) and an autobiography (2006 Pleure pas c’est<br />

pas grave . . . , Editions Flammarion). Her son is actor<br />

Having trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, he<br />

became a painter. His knowledge <strong>of</strong> music (he is a<br />

pianist) and his taste for dancing provided him the<br />

material for most <strong>of</strong> the movies he directed. A fi lm<br />

critic in the 1950s, he also was fi rst assistant director<br />

to Federico Fellini (1955 Il Bidone / UK: The Swindlers<br />
