SÉDOUY, ALAIN DE (Alain Le Chartier de Sédouy<br />

/ November 15, 1929, Paris, France–)<br />

A journalist, he notably was a war correspondent<br />

during the Algerian War. In 1969, he produced<br />

the much-debated Marcel Ophüls documentary Le<br />

Chagrin et la Pitié / Le Chagrin et la Pitié—Chronique<br />

d’une Ville française sous l’Occupation / Das Haus nebenan—Chronik<br />

einer französischen Stadt im Kriege /<br />

Zorn und Mitleid / UK and USA: The Sorrow and the<br />

Pity. He directed or co-directed several movies for<br />

He studied history and philosophy at the Hebrew<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Jerusalem, where he founded and ran<br />

the university fi lm club (1959–1962). Having settled<br />

in Paris in the early 1960s, he graduated from the<br />

IDHEC. From 1967 to 1982, he wrote about fi lms for<br />

La Revue du Cinéma, CinémAction, and L’Avant-Scène du<br />

Cinéma. He authored texts for a photo album about<br />

S.M. Eisenstein (Le Chêne, 1972) and an essay (Abraham,<br />

Enquête sur un Patriarche, Bayard, 2003).<br />
