BARATIER, JACQUES (Jacques Baratier de Rey /<br />

March 8, 1918, Montpellier, Hérault, France–)<br />

The son <strong>of</strong> fi nancier Louis Baratier de Rey, he graduated<br />

with a bachelor’s degree in law and started out<br />

as journalist and fashion drawer (1944–1948). In<br />

1948, he went to Africa to sell “minute portrayals”<br />

and met by chance director René Chanas, who hired<br />

him as assistant director (L’Escadron blanc). He spent<br />

a year serving as assistant director (1950 L’Intrigante<br />

Théodora, Henry Lepage; Nous avons tous fait la même<br />

Chose, René Sti; Mon Ami le Cambrioleur, Henry Lepage).<br />

He already had directed his fi rst shorts. Other<br />

credits (as actor): 1967 Les Demoiselles de Rochefort /<br />

USA: The Young Girls <strong>of</strong> Rochefort (Jacques Demy); (as<br />
