Having graduated with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology<br />

from the University <strong>of</strong> California in 1965, he<br />

came to France to work on his doctorate in ethnology.<br />

While studying at the College de France with<br />

Claude Lévi-Strauss and at L’Ecole des Langues Orientales,<br />

he frequented the Cinémathèque Française.<br />

In 1967, he dropped out <strong>of</strong> the university to enroll<br />

in the Ecole Nationale de la Cinématographie on the<br />

rue de Vaugirard (now Ecole Louis Lumière). His fi rst<br />

directing efforts were shorts, commercials, and docu-<br />

mentaries. He played small parts in fi lms (1985 Spies<br />

Having settled in France in 1956, he had made his acting<br />

debut in Hungary in 1951 (Ütköset békében, Viktor<br />

Gertler). From 1958 (Les Cousins / USA: The Cousins,<br />

Claude Chabrol) to 2008 (Lucifer et moi, Jacques<br />

Grand-Jouan), he played supporting roles in more<br />

than 120 fi lms and TV movies, including half a dozen<br />

Jean-Luc Godard motion pictures (1962 Vivre sa Vie<br />

/ UK: It’s My Life / USA: My Life to Live; 1963 Le Petit
