Palisades, Bernard Schmitt, France / USA; 1998 La Voie<br />

est libre, Stéphane Clavier; 1999 Vénus Beauté (Institut)<br />

/ UK: Venus Beauty Salon / USA: Venus Beauty Institute,<br />

Tonie Marshall). After her sojourn at Villa Médicis in<br />

Rome, she directed her fi rst feature-length. Also seen<br />

as an actress in Je n’en ferai pas un Drame (mediumlength,<br />

He was above all a fi ne character actor seen in a few<br />

plays and about thirty movies (from 1947 Troisième<br />

Cheminée à gauche, Jean Mineur, to his last fi lm as<br />

director, 1964 Voir Venise et . . . crever). He was the<br />

author <strong>of</strong> the original idea <strong>of</strong> Le Couteau dans la Plaie<br />

/ Il coltello nella piaga / La terza dimensione / USA: Five<br />

Miles to Midnight (Anatole Litvak, France / Italy, 1962)<br />

and the original story <strong>of</strong> L’Intrépide (Jean Girault,<br />

1975). He also wrote the screenplay and the dialogue<br />

<strong>of</strong> L’Inconnue de Hong Kong / USA: Stranger from Hong<br />

Kong (Jacques Poitrenaud). He prematurely died <strong>of</strong><br />

leukemia at age forty-three. He was married to Italian<br />

actress Vanna Urbino (b. 1929).<br />

A comic book author since 1977 (his fi rst strips<br />

were published in L’Echo des Savanes), he co-wrote a<br />

movie (1983 Circulez, y’a rien à voir, Patrice Leconte)<br />

and brought one <strong>of</strong> his albums (L’Amour propre ne le<br />

reste jamais très Longtemps) to the screen. In 1996, he<br />

published his fi rst novel (Tremolo Corazon, Editions<br />

Jean-Claude Lattès).<br />
