He started directing Bertolt Brecht’s plays in Aix-en-<br />

in 1965 before directing political documentaries.<br />

From 1971 to 1978, he gave up cinema to work<br />

in a factory. Then he came back behind the camera<br />

and shot his fi rst feature fi lm in 1979.<br />

Intending to be an actor, he went to Paris in 1968 and<br />

enrolled in Tania Balachova’s acting school. He performed<br />

in several plays but showed more interest in<br />

writing and became a highly praised playwright (1981<br />

The son <strong>of</strong> a leather worker, he was two years old<br />

when his family settled in France. After studying<br />

economics, he worked as a real estate agent. One<br />

day, while walking his dog, he met Jean-Michel Noiret<br />

and decided to join his actor’s workshop. He soon<br />

began performing one-man shows and made his fi lm<br />

debut playing a small part in Paulette, la pauvre petite<br />

Milliardaire (Claude Confortès, 1986). Seen in about<br />

thirty movies, mostly comedies, he co-wrote several<br />

screenplays (1989 Aller à Dieppe sans voir la Mer,<br />

short, Nicolas Errèra, also actor; 1996 Pédale douce,<br />

Gabriel Aghion, also actor; 1998 Paparazzi, Alain Berbérian,<br />
