A stage director, he managed the Théâtre de la Commune<br />

d’Aubervilliers. He had his fi rst pr<strong>of</strong>essional contact<br />

with cinema as an assistant director (1961 Janine,<br />

short, Maurice Pialat; 1962 Adieu Philippine / Desideri<br />

nel sole, Jacques Rivette, France / Italy) and occasionally<br />

played small parts in fi lms (1977 Les Loulous, Patrick<br />

Cabouat; 1986 Paulette, la pauvre petite Milliardaire,<br />

Claude Confortès; 1992 A Demain, Didier Martiny).<br />

GARREL, PHILIPPE (April 6, 1948, Boulogne-<br />

Billancourt, Hauts-de-Seine, France–)<br />

The son <strong>of</strong> actor and stage director Maurice Garrel (b.<br />

1923) and the father <strong>of</strong> actor Louis Garrel (b. 1983),<br />

he dropped out <strong>of</strong> high school at age sixteen and<br />

shot his fi rst movie the same year. Then he worked<br />

for the ORTF (<strong>French</strong> TV) Seize Millions de Jeunes<br />

program. He was an assistant to director Claude Berri<br />

(1967 Le Vieil Homme et l’Enfant / UK: Claude / The Old<br />

Man and the Boy / USA: The Two <strong>of</strong> Us) and to Jean-<br />

Pierre Lajournade (1968 Werther, TV movie). His fi rst<br />

feature-length fi lm was originally shot for TV. Since<br />

1968, he opted for a poetic and experimental cinema<br />

and was true to himself until today. Other credits (as<br />
