He left Iran in 1960 and spent two years in London<br />

before moving to Paris, where he took <strong>French</strong> civilization<br />

(history <strong>of</strong> art) courses (1963–1965). He studied<br />

directing and production at IDHEC (1966–1968).<br />

An opponent <strong>of</strong> the Iranian government, he stayed in<br />

France and fi lmed a short fi rst. He had to wait fi ve<br />

years before shooting a feature fi lm.<br />

The daughter <strong>of</strong> actress Marie Laforêt, she briefl y<br />

worked as an assistant art director (1989 Monsieur<br />

Hire / UK and USA: Monsieur Hire, Patrice Leconte)<br />

before shooting a short in 1990. She co-directed her<br />

fi rst feature fi lm with her former husband Patrick<br />

Alessandrin, for whom she also wrote the screenplay<br />

and the dialogue <strong>of</strong> 15 Août (as Lisa Azuelos-<br />

Alessandrin, 2001). She authored an essay (2004<br />

Manuel à l’Usage des Filles qui auraient dû dire non, Editions<br />

Pictorus) and two novels (2005 Le Bras blanc,<br />

Editions Jean-Claude Lattès; 2008 Eloge du Silence<br />

pendant l’Amour, Editions Plon) and created her own<br />
