The nephew <strong>of</strong> stage actor Alphonse Dieudonné, he<br />

was the pupil <strong>of</strong> Paul Mounet at the Paris Dramatic<br />

Art Conservatory and started out at age nineteen at<br />

the Théâtre des Arts. From 1908 (L’Assassinat du Duc<br />

de Guise / USA: The Assassination <strong>of</strong> the Duke de Guise,<br />

André Calmettes ) to 1942 (Notre-Dame de Paris,<br />

short, René Hervouin), he played in about thirty movies<br />

and remained the unforgettable Abel Gance’s Napoléon<br />

(1927 Napoléon / Napoléon vu par Abel Gance<br />

/ USA: Napoleon / Abel Gance’s Napoleon; 1934 Napoléon<br />

Bonaparte / Napoléon Bonaparte, vu et entendu<br />

par Abel Gance, abridged sound version <strong>of</strong> previous<br />

Napoleon). He portrayed the <strong>French</strong> emperor once<br />

again in Madame sans-Gêne (Roger Richebé, 1941).<br />

He also wrote several movies (1917 Les Chacals, as<br />
