After studying decoration at the Beaux-Arts <strong>of</strong> Nancy<br />

for three years, he learned cinema (editing and directing)<br />

at the Paris-based Conservatoire Indépendant<br />

du Cinéma Français in 1969–1970. He already had<br />

worked as a cameraman with his cousin vulcanologist<br />

Maurice Krafft, who fi lmed the Etna and the Stromboli<br />

and made Super-8 cartoons at age fi fteen. From 1970<br />

to 1972, he directed commercials and created some<br />

credits titles. Then he shot three animated shorts and<br />

founded his own production company, Pink Splash Production,<br />

which fi nanced and released many animation<br />

movies from 1971 to 1981. Between 1978 and 1983,<br />

he showed his fi lms in New York (Carnegie Hall Cinema<br />

and Cornell University), Minneapolis (Art School),<br />

Los Angeles (University <strong>of</strong> California, Los Angeles), San<br />

Francisco (Pacifi c <strong>Film</strong> Archives), and various European<br />

countries. He also was an animator and special effects<br />

technician (1979 Gros Câlin / Cocco mio, Jean-Pierre<br />

Rawson, France / Italy) and creator <strong>of</strong> sound effects<br />

(1986 Le Bonheur a encore frappé, Jean-Luc Trotignon).<br />
