He was the pupil <strong>of</strong> Francis Huster at the Cours<br />

Florent and attended Patrice Chéreau’s courses at<br />

the Théâtre des Amandiers. Chéreau directed him in<br />

four <strong>of</strong> Shakespeare’s plays (Love’s Labours Lost; As You<br />

Like It; Much Ado About Nothing; Twelfth Night, or What<br />

You Will). In 1982, he made his fi lm debut in Maurice<br />

Pialat’s A nos Amours / UK and USA: To Our Loves. Seen<br />

in about fi fty movies, he directed a feature-length fi lm<br />

medium-length fi lms during the occupation <strong>of</strong><br />

France (the anti-Semitic Le Péril juif and Les Corrupteurs,<br />

Between the ages <strong>of</strong> fi fteen and twenty-fi ve he shot<br />

about twenty amateur Super-8 shorts. In 1992, more<br />

interested in cinema than in his studies, he dropped<br />

out <strong>of</strong> the university and moved to Paris, where he<br />

showed one <strong>of</strong> his Super-8 efforts to fi lm critics at<br />

Les Cahiers du Cinéma and Bref. They encouraged him<br />

to persevere. In 1995, he directed his fi rst pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

movie. He edited a short (2001 Ce Vieux Rêve<br />

qui bouge, Alain Guiraudie) and appeared in Humphrey<br />

Bogart et la Femme invisible (short, Anne Benhaïem).<br />
