GARY, ROMAIN (Romain Kacewgari / May 8, 1914,

The son of Polish Jews, he settled in France with
his mother at age fourteen. Having graduated with
a bachelor’s degree in law, he published his fi rst
short stories in the monthly newspaper Gringoire
(1935–1937). A French citizen since 1935, he served
in the Free French Air Force during World War II and
chose Gary (“burn” in Russian) as his nom de guerre
and nom de plume. After the liberation of France, he
worked in the French diplomatic service. In 1945,
he published his fi rst novel (Education européenne).
