The son <strong>of</strong> Polish Jews, he settled in France with<br />

his mother at age fourteen. Having graduated with<br />

a bachelor’s degree in law, he published his fi rst<br />

short stories in the monthly newspaper Gringoire<br />

(1935–1937). A <strong>French</strong> citizen since 1935, he served<br />

in the Free <strong>French</strong> Air Force during World War II and<br />

chose Gary (“burn” in Russian) as his nom de guerre<br />

and nom de plume. After the liberation <strong>of</strong> France, he<br />

worked in the <strong>French</strong> diplomatic service. In 1945,<br />

he published his fi rst novel (Education européenne).<br />
