Having graduated with a bachelor’s degree and a<br />

master <strong>of</strong> philosophy, he became a fi lm critic in 1969,<br />

writing in Les Cahiers du Cinéma. He made his fi lm debut<br />

as an actor in a short (1967 Vampirisme, Bernard<br />

Chaouat, Patrice Duvic) and played in almost thirty<br />

movies (from 1978 La Vocation suspendue, Raoul Ruiz,<br />

to 2007 La Clef, Guillaume Nicloux). Known mostly as<br />

a screenwriter (about fi fty fi lms from 1976 Moi, Pierre<br />

Rivière, ayant égorgé ma mère, ma Sœur et mon Frère . . .,<br />

René Allio, to 2008 36 Vues du Pic Saint-Loup, Jacques<br />

Rivette), he directed half a dozen features in ten<br />

years. He also is a teacher at the Fémis.<br />

du Ciel / USA: They Are No Angels, two parts, “Ce<br />

ne sont pas des Anges,” “Terre de France,” shot in<br />

1945–1946; 1968 Drôle de Jeu, Pierre Kast), he was<br />

dubbing translator and director (he notably did the<br />

<strong>French</strong> version <strong>of</strong> Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho). His fi rst<br />

feature fi lm, a documentary on the Korean War, was<br />
