DURAND, JEAN (December 15, 1882, Paris,<br />

France–March 10, 1946, Paris, France)<br />

A gifted drawer, he published his fi rst work at age sixteen<br />

in a newspaper run by Georges Fagot, a future<br />

director for Pathé, and illustrated the autobiography<br />

<strong>of</strong> “Bibi-la-Purée,” a colorful fi gure <strong>of</strong> the Quartier<br />

Latin who had been the secretary <strong>of</strong> poet Paul<br />

Verlaine. An illustrator, journalist, actor, and author<br />

<strong>of</strong> cabaret revues with Georges Fagot, he made his<br />

directing debut for Pathé in 1908. He directed many<br />

comic fi lms for such companies as Lux and Company<br />

with his actors troupe named “Les Pouittes.” Then he<br />

shot successful westerns with Joë Hamman. He also<br />

was a co-screenwriter <strong>of</strong> Tarnished Reputations (Herbert<br />

Blaché, Alice Guy, Léonce Perret, 1920, USA)<br />

and assistant director (1925 Madame Sans-Gêne,<br />

Léonce Perret). His wife was actress Berthe Dagmar<br />

(1884–1934).<br />
