to 1970 (Time for Loving, Christopher Miles, UK), he<br />

also wrote screenplays and dialogues <strong>of</strong> about twenty<br />

movies, including Monsieur Vincent (Maurice Cloche,<br />

1947), Pattes blanches / UK and USA: White Paws (Jean<br />

Grémillon), and Caroline Chérie / USA: Dear Caroline (Richard<br />

Pottier). The fi rst feature fi lm he directed was an<br />

adaptation <strong>of</strong> one his most succesful plays. His daughter<br />

Catherine (1934–1989) was a stage actress.<br />

Of Icelandic origin, she came to Paris, where she<br />

studied and obtained two degrees (philosophy and<br />

psychology) and a diploma in psychopathology. Graduated<br />

from the Fémis fi lm school in 1989, she directed<br />

several documentary shorts before fi lming her fi rst<br />

feature fi lm (Haut les Coeurs!), the autobiographical<br />

story <strong>of</strong> a young woman suffering from breast cancer.<br />

ANTOINE, ANDRÉ (Léonard André Antoine / January<br />

A former gas company employee, he dedicated his life<br />

to the stage from 1887, the year he created with a few<br />

amateur friends the Théâtre-Libre (known as Théâtre<br />

Antoine since 1897). An adept <strong>of</strong> a naturalist aesthetic,<br />

he broke many dramatic conventions and totally renewed<br />

contemporary theater, infl uencing the greatest<br />

<strong>French</strong> stage directors <strong>of</strong> the twentieth century (Firmin<br />

Gémier, Charles Dullin, Sacha Pitoëff, Jacques Copeau,<br />

Jean Vilar) and such fi lmmakers as Jacques Feyder, Jean<br />

Renoir, Marcel Pagnol, and Jean Grémillon. In 1914, he<br />

entered fi lms as an assistant director to Albert Capellani,<br />

who was his collaborator onstage. He appeared<br />

as himself in Ceux de chez nous / USA: Those <strong>of</strong> Our<br />

Land (Sacha Guitry, 1915). His son, André-Paul Antoine<br />

(1892–1982), was a playwright and a screenwriter.<br />
