After studying at the Beaux-Arts and at the Marseille<br />

Conservatory, he began acting onstage and in fi lms<br />

(more than seventy movies from 1921 Âmes corses,<br />

Paul Barlatier, Gaston Mouru de Lacotte, to 1946 La<br />

Kermesse rouge, Paul Mesnier). He occasionally was<br />

an assistant director (1927 Pardonnée, Jean Cassagne;<br />

1947 Chemins sans Loi, Guillaume Radot). Other<br />

credit (as technical adviser): 1944 Le Bal des Passants<br />

Having trained at the Paris Conservatory, he briefl y<br />

played onstage. The cousin <strong>of</strong> poet and writer Charles<br />

Péguy and a poet himself under the pseudonym <strong>of</strong><br />

Marcel Robert, he was the son-in-law <strong>of</strong> producer<br />

Léon Gaumont. <strong>Film</strong>maker Emile Cohl suggested that<br />

Gaumont hire him as a screenwriter (1908 Les Agents<br />

tels qu’on nous les représente et les Agents tels qu’ils sont,<br />

short, Louis Feuillade). He also occasionally worked<br />

as an actor (1909 Cyrano de Bergerac, short, Jean<br />

Durand) and assistant director and adapter (1923 La<br />

Neige sur les Pas, Henri Etiévant; 1927 Croquette ou<br />

Une Histoire de Cirque, Louis Mercanton).<br />
