After his secondary studies in Conakry, in 1964 he<br />

moved to France, where he graduated with a bachelor’s<br />

degree in modern letters from La Sorbonne.<br />

He studied drama at Cours Simon and then at the<br />

Rue Blanche Conservatory before beginning a career<br />

as a stage, TV, and fi lm actor. He notably played in<br />

Chut! (Jean-Pierre Mocky, 1972), Two People (Robert<br />

Wise, USA, 1972), L’Etat sauvage / UK and USA:<br />

Savage State (Francis Girod, 1978), Bako, l’Autre Rive<br />

(Jacques Champreux, 1979), Le Pr<strong>of</strong>essionnel / USA:<br />

The Pr<strong>of</strong>essional (Georges Lautner, 1981), Black Mic<br />

Mac (also co-screenwriter, Thomas Gilou, 1986), and<br />

Lumumba (Raoul Peck, 1990).<br />

Isabelle Doval), she directed her fi rst shorts under<br />

her real name. Her husband is actor and director José<br />

(2002 Fantômes, Jean-Paul Civeyrac, shot in 2000; 2003<br />

Les Jours où je n’existe pas, Jean-Charles Fitoussi).<br />

He studied painting at the Beaux-Arts and briefl y was<br />

an actor. His cousin, fi lmmaker Jean-Pierre Melville,<br />

hired him as a second assistant director (1949 Le<br />

Silence de la Mer; 1950 Les Enfants terribles / USA: The<br />

Strange Ones). In 1951, he directed his fi rst short and<br />

then created his own fi lm production company, Port-<br />

Royal <strong>Film</strong>s. He died <strong>of</strong> cancer. His former wife was<br />

actress Josée-Marie Nat (b. 1940).<br />
