The son <strong>of</strong> novelist and screenwriter Jean-Patrick<br />

Manchette (1942–1995), he started working in 1980<br />

for such counterculture magazines as Métal Hurlant<br />

(original <strong>French</strong> version <strong>of</strong> Heavy Metal), Actuel, and<br />

The Face. In 1982, with future director Christophe<br />

Gans, he created the fi lm monthly Starfi x and acted<br />

as his fi rst editor in chief. Throughout the 1980s and<br />

1990s, while pursuing his TV career, he held several<br />

editorial jobs in major <strong>French</strong> publishing houses,<br />

wrote books for teenagers, and translated crime<br />

novels by the likes <strong>of</strong> Elmore Leonard and Donald<br />

Westlake. He authored books on James Stewart<br />

(Editions Henry Veyrier, 1991) and John Cassavetes<br />

(Editions Ramsay, 1999).<br />
